Week 4 Day 3
Luke 10:25-37 (NIV84)
‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’Luke 10:27
Jesus is a master teacher. Pay attention to the questions and the answers in this account. First of all, remember Jesus does not ask a question because He needs more information. The question is usually sparked to build curiosity and searching within the person asking the question. And when Jesus is asked a question, He quite often answers with a story. In this case the question is, who is my neighbor?
Jesus responds with the story of the good Samaritan. This story is packed with surprises. It is shocking that the priest doesn’t stop to help the man who was robbed and left for dead. We are left wondering why the Levite didn’t stop. After all helping was in the DNA of this tribe. The biggest shock is not who didn’t stop, but who did stop. A Samaritan? Really?
Then Jesus asks another question, who was the neighbor? He flipped the question. Instead of asking who must I show mercy and kindness to, Jesus asks, to whom can you show mercy and kindness? That’s a different tune all together? “Would you be my neighbor?”
Today is a day of opportunity for you to find someone to show kindness and mercy.
Who will be your neighbor?
