Week 4 Day 4
Reading: Matthew 5:1-12
“Blessed are you when….”Matthew 5:11
The beatitudes were given by Jesus at the Sermon on the Mount. Just as Moses gave the people of God principles to live by as the people of God at Mt. Sinai, Jesus also teaches the people of God the way of living under the new covenant. The Beatitudes are a bit of an outline for the rest of the sermon on the Mount. Jesus unpacks many of these issues with further remarks.
Take a moment and read the Beatitudes one at a time and reflect on each one. Are these people the ones you would usually considered blessed? What is the unique blessing for each of Beatitudes? What does real happiness and blessing look like in everyday living?
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
OK, here is the big question – is Jesus talking about the way things should be, the way things will be, or the ways things are right now in the Kingdom of God?
